Colposcopy For

Abnormal Pap Smears

At Georgetown OBGYN, we understand that an abnormal Pap smear can be concerning. As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive care, we offer colposcopy, a diagnostic procedure used to examine specific areas of the body, such as the vulva, to identify abnormalities, cancer, or genital human papillomavirus (HPV). Colposcopy is commonly performed as a follow-up to an abnormal Pap smear.

Procedure at Georgetown OBGYN

Our skilled and experienced physicians perform colposcopy using a colposcope, a microscope that helps identify malignant lesions on the vulva. During the exam, similar to a Pap smear, a speculum is inserted into the vagina to make the cervix visible. The colposcope allows the physician to view the area at 10 to 40 times its normal size. If abnormal cells are detected, a biopsy may be performed.

Safety and Complications

At Georgetown OBGYN, we prioritize your safety and well-being. Colposcopy is generally a safe procedure with few complications. Light bleeding or discharge for up to a week after the procedure is considered normal. Our team is always available to address any concerns or questions you may have throughout the process.

If you have an abnormal Pap smear, trust Georgetown OBGYN to provide the expert care you need. Our dedicated team will work closely with you to identify any issues and guide further treatment as needed.
