Hysteroscopy

At Georgetown OBGYN, we provide hysteroscopy procedures as part of our comprehensive women's healthcare services. Hysteroscopy uses a tool called a hysteroscope to examine the lining of the uterus and identify, diagnose, or treat abnormalities.

Reasons for a Hysteroscopy at Georgetown OBGYN

Our experienced physicians may recommend a hysteroscopy to determine the cause of:

  • Abnormal bleeding

  • Bleeding after menopause

  • Infertility

Hysteroscopy may also be used to diagnose and remove fibroids or polyps and find and reposition an intrauterine device.

Hysteroscopy Procedure at Georgetown OBGYN

A local or general anesthesia may be used to relax the patient and relieve any potential discomfort during the procedure. The hysteroscope, which has a light and camera, is inserted into the vagina and moved through the cervix to the uterus. The hysteroscope projects an image onto a display screen for the doctor to review. If polyps are present, the doctor may use a surgical device to cut and remove them. The doctor may also take a small sample of tissue to examine more closely under a microscope. Patients may experience some cramping or vaginal discharge following the procedure.

While a simple and safe procedure, a hysteroscopy is not recommended for everyone. A hysteroscopy should only be performed if recommended specifically by a doctor. At Georgetown OBGYN, our team will work closely with you to discuss the necessity of the procedure and address any concerns you may have, ensuring you receive the best possible care.
