Miscarriage Support

At Georgetown OB-GYN, we understand that experiencing a miscarriage can be an emotionally challenging event. Our compassionate team is here to support you during this difficult time, providing the necessary care and guidance to help you recover both physically and emotionally.

Causes of Miscarriage

Miscarriage is rarely caused by anything the pregnant woman did. It can occur due to various reasons, such as:

  • Abnormalities in fetal development

  • Chromosomal problems in the fetus, such as a blighted ovum

  • Maternal age over 35

  • Smoking, alcohol use, or drug use

  • Pre-existing maternal conditions (thyroid disease, diabetes, infection, or autoimmune disorders)

  • Abnormalities within the uterus (scar tissue or fibroids)

  • A history of previous miscarriages

  • Being underweight or overweight

  • Severe trauma

It's important to seek treatment for preexisting conditions before and during pregnancy to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

Symptoms of Miscarriage

Some common symptoms of a miscarriage include:

  • Heavy menstrual-like bleeding

  • Cramping

  • Spotting

  • Abdominal or pelvic pain

If you experience any of these symptoms, please consult our team to ensure the health of your pregnancy.

Treatment and Support After Miscarriage

Physical recovery after a miscarriage may take weeks or months. In some cases, an ultrasound may reveal tissue left behind in the uterus. Treatment options include:

  • Dilation and curettage (D&C): A procedure to dilate the cervix and remove tissue with a curette

  • Medication: To help pass the remaining tissue

  • Waiting for the tissue to pass naturally

Emotional recovery often takes longer. It's normal to experience feelings of sadness, guilt, depression, or numbness. We encourage you and your partner to lean on each other and seek help from loved ones or support groups when needed. When you're physically and emotionally ready, you can consider trying for another pregnancy.

At Georgetown OB-GYN, we are committed to supporting you through the challenges of miscarriage. If you have concerns or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
