Sexually Transmitted

Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can have a significant impact on an individual's health and well-being. At Georgetown OB-GYN, we are committed to providing education, testing, and treatment options to help our patients maintain their sexual health.

What Are Sexually Transmitted Infections?

STIs are infections spread through sexual contact, caused by bacteria, parasites, or viruses. Common STIs include:

  • Genital Herpes

  • Gonorrhea

  • Chlamydia

  • HIV

  • HPV

  • Condyloma

  • Syphilis

  • Hepatitis

Untreated STIs can cause illness, cancer, infertility, or harm to a fetus during pregnancy.

Risk Factors for STIs

Higher risk of contracting an STI may be associated with:

  • Unprotected sex

  • Multiple sexual partners

  • Existing STI infection

  • Drug or alcohol abuse

  • Sharing needles for drug use or tattoos

Symptoms of STIs

Many STIs have no symptoms, particularly in women. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Vaginal or penile discharge

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Painful urination

  • Sores or blisters on the genitals

  • Warts or growths on the genitals

  • Abdominal pain

Diagnosis and Treatment of STIs

Diagnosis involves a physical examination, review of symptoms, and additional tests such as genital fluid samples, cultures, urinalysis, or blood tests. Treatment varies depending on the specific STI. Antibiotics, antiviral medications, or surgical methods may be used.

Preventing STIs

Preventative measures include:

  • Abstinence from sexual activity

  • Using condoms for all sexual activities

  • Maintaining a monogamous relationship

  • Avoiding needle-sharing

Vaccinations are available for certain strains of HPV (Gardasil and Cervarix), recommended for females and males between ages 9 and 26.

Regular STI testing is advised for individuals with multiple sexual partners, even if they practice safe sex. At Georgetown OB-GYN, we are here to help you maintain your sexual health and provide the necessary care and support. If you have concerns about STIs or need testing, please schedule an appointment with our team.
