Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition where individuals lose control over their bladder, resulting in urine leakage. At Georgetown OB-GYN, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for urinary incontinence to help patients regain control and improve their quality of life.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence

UI may be caused by urinary tract infections, weak muscles in the urinary tract, or certain medications that weaken bladder muscles. Normal urination is disrupted in people with UI, leading to bladder control issues and symptoms.

Symptoms of Urinary Incontinence

Symptoms may include:

  • Strong desire to urinate

  • Pelvic pressure

  • Frequent urination

  • Nocturia (urinating at night while sleeping)

  • Painful urination

  • Bedwetting

Types of Urinary Incontinence

UI can be classified into three types:

  1. Urge incontinence - urine leakage after a sudden urge to urinate due to an overactive bladder muscle wall.

  2. Stress incontinence - urine leakage after activities that place pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, laughing, or sneezing.

  3. Overflow incontinence - inactive bladder muscle doesn't completely empty the bladder after urination.

Diagnosis of Urinary Incontinence

Diagnosis involves evaluating the patient's medical history, conducting tests, and possibly keeping a bladder or urination diary. Tests may include pelvic exams, blood tests, urinalysis, cystograms, and stress tests to determine urine leakage during physically stressful situations.

Treatment of Urinary Incontinence

Treatment options vary based on the severity of the condition and may include:

  • Bladder training

  • Avoiding alcohol and caffeine

  • Medication for pelvic muscle spasms

  • Kegel exercises

  • Medical devices such as urethral inserts or pessaries

  • Surgery (in some cases)

Prevention of Urinary Incontinence

Some preventive measures include:

  • Drinking less fluids

  • Regularly emptying the bladder

  • Avoiding caffeinated beverages

  • Practicing Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles

At Georgetown OB-GYN, we are committed to helping patients manage urinary incontinence and improve their overall well-being. If you are experiencing symptoms, please schedule an appointment with our team for evaluation and personalized treatment options.
